BNPB Sends Assistance for Flood and Landslide Handling in Jayawijaya, an area in Papua, not New Guinea

Baca Gitu Loh - Far East Indonesia - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) provided ready-to-use funds (DSP) in the amount of IDR 500 million for flood and landslide emergency management in Jayawijaya Regency, Papua Mountains Province. The disaster that hit Walaik District occurred on Friday (12/5/2023).

BNPB symbolically handed over the DSP to Jayawijaya Regional Secretary Thonny Mathius Mayor, located at the Jayawijaya Regent's Office.

"BNPB has handed over the DSP to the Jayawijaya District Government," said Head of the Subdirectorate for Rescue and Evacuation Facilitation of BNPB Gatot Satria Wijaya in his statement on Thursday (18/5/2023).

In addition to funds, Gatot said that BNPB also sent aid in goods that were transported by plane from Jakarta.

The aid goods worth IDR 1.65 billion included 1,000 blankets, 1,000 mattresses, 10 generator sets, 200 hygiene kits, 3 family tents, 500 packages of clothes and basic necessities.

BNPB support is scheduled to arrive in Jayapura today, Thursday (18/5/2023).

"Clothing assistance in the form of 1,000 children's sweaters, 500 adult jackets and 1,000 children's jackets," said Gatot.

Furthermore, BNPB will monitor the use of the DSP so that it runs effectively and efficiently.

So that those affected by the disaster can return to organize their lives.

"BNPB will provide assistance for command post activities and the administration of the use of DSP," Gatot said.

It is known, the floods and landslides in the Jayawijaya area resulted in 3 people dying.

The incident which took place in the early hours of the morning at 00.30 local time occurred after heavy rains flushed the area.

The victim who died was identified from Elarek Village in the Walaik District.

In addition to the death toll, as many as 6 residents were injured and have received treatment at the Wamena Regional General Hospital.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency informed that 12 families in Elarek Village were affected by the flood and landslide.
