Baca Gitu Loh - Bali, Indonesia - As many as three dead whales have washed ashore on three beaches in Bali in the past week, starting from Saturday (1/4/2023) to Saturday (8/4/2023).
Bali was then rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0, Monday (10/4/2023).
So, is there a connection between the dead whale stranding and signs that there will be an earthquake in Bali?
Trisna Malia Staff of the Earthquake Center of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Regional III Denpasar emphasized that there was no direct connection between the whale stranding and the earthquake.
"Whales can become stranded for various reasons, such as disturbances to their navigation system, changes in marine environmental conditions, or health problems," he explained when confirmed by detikBali, Monday afternoon.
Furthermore, Trisna said that earthquakes occur when there is a shift in tectonic plates or other geological activity under the earth's surface. However, there are several theories that the sound produced by underwater earthquakes can affect the behavior of whales.
"Several studies have shown that the sound of earthquakes can affect the navigation of whales and trigger them to become stranded. However, this cannot be used as a reference that the incidents of stranding whales in recent days were caused by earthquakes," he explained.
Previously, the Head of the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), R Agus BudiSantosa, explained five reasons why whales died stranding on a number of beaches in Bali.
Namely, the Bali Sea is the annual migration route for marine mammals. It is suspected that there is noise at sea, extreme weather changes, changes in sea contours and currents, and natural disasters.
"From the research results that I have read, there are several things that can affect the stranding of marine mammals such as whales and dolphins. Among them is noise in the sea that affects sonar," Agus said in his statement, Sunday (9/4/2023).
As for natural disasters, Agus said that whales have an instinct for natural disasters. They will seek shelter causing them to get lost. ***
